Having a school turnaround plan is important, but more important is having a team in place that can deal with the complexities and uncertainties of a school transformation.
Please join us for a special news conference at the Sylvester Small Administration Building on Thursday, June 9, at 10 a.m. as Superintendent James announces an ambitious initiative, the "Impact Network," which ensures all children, regardless of their address, perform at the highest level.
As part of the APS "Impact Network," eight schools will participate in the University of Virginia's School Turnaround Specialist Program starting July 2011: Helen Arnold CLC, Crouse CLC, McEbright Elementary School, Robinson CLC, Seiberling Elementary School, Innes CLC, Jennings CLC and Kenmore High School. The School Turnaround Specialist Program is a two-year program that equips principals, teacher leaders and central office administrators with the skills needed to bring about deep change in under-performing schools and provides them with ongoing support.
The UVA School Turnaround Specialist Program will guide the development of successful school leaders and work with the staff to create environments that support academic achievement. Participating schools will send leadership teams to a summer residency at UVA, and coaches from UVA will provide support within the schools.
"We know from first-hand experience that successful turnaround plans provide clear and consistent leadership," said Superintendent David W. James. "The University of Virginia's School Turnaround Specialist Program will allow us to enlist a new breed of high-quality school leaders who are trained specifically in transforming our schools."
