Character Education

Character Education

Character education is a part of Akron Public Schools. Schools are doing a variety of activities to bring character education to the attention of their students. Students are being recognized for 'Doing the Right Thing." Students are making bulletin boards of the six pillars: Caring, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Trustworthiness and Citizenship. Keep an eye on this page as we highlight activities that some of our buildings are doing.

New Elementary School Program

Each month, a "pillar" is being promoted in each of our elementary schools. A packet is sent home with students around the 15th of each month with information regarding one of the Pillars of Character. Parents are encouraged to discuss this pillar with their child and do the activities suggested in the packet. Those activities may include watching a movie or reading a book. The parents and child are then encouraged to discuss the significance of this book or movie. The parent is asked to complete the form that shows how their child exemplifies that pillar of character and have the child return it to the school BEFORE the 10th of the next month. The forms need to be in the Office of School Climate NO LATER than the 10th of the next month. Any form not completed and signed by a parent will be returned!

Here are the “Pillars of the Month”:

  • Citizenship – Make your community a better place. Obey the laws and respect authority. Do something that will make your community a better place in which to live. Forms are due by February 10.
  • Respect – The Golden Rule – “Treat others the way you would like to be treated.” Respect differences in others. Care about yourself and others, and be aware of how your actions affect others. Forms are due by March 10.
  • Trustworthiness – Being trustworthy means being honest in your words and actions. You keep your promises when you are trustworthy. You stand up for your beliefs and do what is right. Forms are due by April 10.
  • Fairness – You abide by the rules and do not cheat or harm others. Understand that fair does not always mean equal. Forms are due by May 10.

Each student who returns a form before the 10th of each month to their teacher will receive a certificate (to show that they show GOOD CHARACTER) and a gift certificate to Outback Steakhouse.

We all teach character to children by our daily actions. How we treat other individuals and how we conduct ourselves – all send a message to those around us. We may choose not to formally teach character, but that sends a message as well.
